Odaria island guide

Kos, one good day at a time.

Odaria sits between Lambi Beach and Kos Town: close enough for slow mornings on foot, with the rest of the island waiting beyond. Use this guide as a starting point, then leave room for detours.

Close to Odaria

Lambi Beach

Kos Town

Easy without a car
beach, harbour and old town

Two moments to make time for.

Stroll & café

Kos Old Town

Wander through the lanes around Eleftherias Square, the ancient agora and the castle-side waterfront. Go in the late afternoon, browse the small shops, then stay for dinner as the streets begin to cool.

Begin around Eleftherias Square, continue through the ancient agora and finish beside Neratzia Castle and the harbour. The centre is compact enough to explore without a fixed route.

Odaria tip: Walk or cycle from Odaria and return along the harbour after dinner.

Sea & warm springs

Therma Hot Springs

At Therma, naturally warm mineral water meets the Aegean inside a rock-framed pool. Bring water and suitable shoes; the access road and shore can be rough, so check local conditions before setting out.

The springs are reached on the island’s south-east coast. The final approach and the pebbled shore can be demanding; allow time, wear secure shoes and avoid the hottest hours.

Odaria tip: Take water and check access and sea conditions locally before leaving.

Ancient Kos

The Asklepieion

Set on green terraces above Kos Town, the Asklepieion was the island’s ancient healing sanctuary. Walk between the ruins, learn about Kos’s medical heritage and pause for the wide view towards the coast.

The sanctuary is arranged across several terraces above the plain. It is worth moving slowly: the setting, the medical history associated with Hippocrates and the coastal view belong together.

Odaria tip: Go earlier in the day for softer light and a quieter visit.

Mountain light

Sunset in Zia

Zia sits high on the slopes of Mount Dikeos and is loved for its far-reaching sunset views. Arrive with time to stroll through the village, find a terrace and watch the island change colour.

The village is most atmospheric before sunset, but also busiest then. Arriving earlier gives you time for the lanes, small shops and a table with a view.

Odaria tip: Allow extra time before sunset and reserve a table in high season.

Village & coast

Kefalos

Spend a slower day in the south-west of Kos, where Kefalos village looks across a long bay. Combine the old village with a swim, a coastal lunch and views towards the small islet of Kastri.

Kefalos deserves more than a quick stop. Pair the hilltop village with the bay, Agios Stefanos and a view towards Kastri for a full day in the island’s south-west.

Odaria tip: A car makes the long south-west day much easier.

Good to know

Do I need a car?

Not for Lambi Beach or Kos Town. A car, scooter or organised transfer is useful for Therma, Zia and Kefalos.

What works well by bicycle?

Kos Town, Lambi and the flatter coastal routes are easy starting points. Choose inland routes according to your experience and the heat.

When should I visit?

Early mornings suit ruins and longer drives. Late afternoons are ideal for town walks and mountain light. Always check current opening and access information locally.

Kos / Odaria

A quieter side of Kos.

Two detours away from the familiar postcard stops.

Best reached by car

Haihoutes · the almost-forgotten village

Stone houses, quiet lanes and a traditional café tucked into the hills. Come in the late afternoon, take your time and check seasonal café hours.

Car + a walk on uneven ground

Aspri Petra · the white-stone cave

Near Kefalos, a striking rock opening and a cave with archaeological history. The last stretch involves rough terrain and a walk: bring sturdy shoes and water, and do not attempt it in the midday heat.
